History

History_1.jpg

Founded in the 1970’s by some members of the Washington D.C. Fabrangen Havurah (including Arthur Waskow, now a Reconstructionist Rabbi) and other families (including Nessa Spitzer), the Fabrangen Cheder School was designed to be an alternative to “drop-off” Sunday school. True to that original vision, Cheder is a place for all family members to consider, explore, and celebrate their Jewishness.

Historically the Fabrangen Cheder School met in the homes of members. In some years when the community could not be accommodated in a single home, two neighboring houses were used. In 2002, when the size of the Cheder School surpassed the capacity of members’ homes, Cheder took residence at the Friends Community School in College Park. Since the fall of 2005 Fabrangen Cheder School has rented space at the Silver Spring Jewish Learning Center in Wheaton. In 2006 the Fabrangen Cheder Community became a non-profit corporation (501c3).  The community sponsors the school, celebrates together, works on social justice projects and sponsors educational clubs.
